  I came to this establishment by way of the Veterans Choice Program because I needed help getting an eye care and it seemed like this was the best place to get it done. They are cutting edge on eye care. The Veterans Choice program is set up to allow Veterans to use an eye care office reasonably close to home. In my case I had a special need and was given a one year admission into the program to help me financially to get Serum Tears. The Veterans Affairs Administration paid for any care that I got done at this establishment. However I never got the help I hoped for. I arrived with letters from my Opthamologist from Wills Eye and the VA. Over the past 2 years I had been thru a stream of eye doctors, Retina Specialists, Neuro Opthamologists, Optometrists, etc and was finally placed in a Dry Eye Clinic at the Hospital of University, Phila Pa. I have severe dry eyes caused by Graft Vs Host Disease. Which is a disease many Bone Marrow Transplant Patients develop. I had had Leukemia. The GVHD caused my full blown cataracts in a few months from onset. Once I had cataract surgery I still had severe vision problems due to the severe dry eyes that occurred after surgery due to the GVHD which is now chronic. I came to Friedberg Associates expecting to go forward in my care. Instead she tried to take me backward. Trying eye drops that had already proven to not work for me. She even had me try one that burnt my eyes and eye lids, and gave me blurred and double vision. She had me to start a certain fish oil which I could not afford. She wasted time giving me follow up appointments 2 and 3 months apart as if I had all the time in the world to accomplish this task. So I realized she didn't understand the Veterans Choice program. Maybe for her it was just a way to get new patients. Not patients with real eye problems. I tried to get an earlier appointment but this is a very busy place So I wrote a letter explaining my reason for being there. I was called in early and she then began to look into my needs according to why I was sent there. Every time I was there they tried to make me pay for care the VA was to be billed for. They didn't understand the process. They even billed my insurance which they were not supposed to do and then sent me a bill!! There was a procedure she felt might help me but it cost $800. She wasnt't sure if the VA would pay for it so she didn't do it. Didn't even inquire. Didn't even try. When she could not find anyone still making Serum tears she gave me a six month follow up appointment ( meaning she was done with me) and one month later they called and cancelled it. I personally feel this is a great place in theory and probably in practice. Cutting edge on eye care but they don't have a clue about a program for Veterans which they signed up to give care. They were not able to help me and I can accept that but I also was not handled properly nor made to feel that they welcomed my being there. They didn't respect the opinions of ALL of the specialists I had seen prior to them nor did they respect me as a patient who had been on a 2 year journey before coming to them for help. Of course I didn't reschedule my appointment with them but I do plan to let the Veterans Choice manager and the VA Oohthamologists know of my treatment at this place. Maybe this is not the place for Veterans who need help with severe eye ailments.
